About Brahmotsavam

“Utsavam” (Religious Festival) like “Yagna” is celebrated to bring welfare, tranquility and universal peace. The origin of Brahmotsavam is the 9 day celebration of Lord Venkateswara at the Tirupathi Temple in India during October or November of every year. We will be celebrating Brahmotsavam in June of this year from June 6th to June 8th, 2025. The dates are selected to suit the local weather conditions and to follow the Religious calendar.

What is Brahmotsavam?
“Brahma” means “Brahat” or “Great”. ‘Utsavam” means “Yagna/m”. Brahmotsavam means that among all the utsavams, rituals, or poojas performed inside the temple, this is the grandest of them all. The origin of the celebration traces back to Lord Brahma, the Creator who first conducted this festival to pay homage to Lord Balaji at Tirupathi. Lord Brahma worshiped Lord Balaji on the banks of the holy Pushkarini river in Tirumala as a way to give thanks for the Lord’s protection of mankind. This Utsavam is called “Brahmotsavam” (Brahma’s Utsavam).

On Thursday June 5th, the evening prior to the start of Brahmotsavam, prayers will be offered to all the Deities in the temple (Bhagavat Prarthana), followed by Rakshabandhanam (holy yellow thread will be tied to the wrists of Deities, priests and Yajamans) for the commitment to the Brahmotsavam. Following this ritual, Ankurarpanam will be performed (this ritual signifies preparing the ground for the three day festival).

We will start the morning of Friday June 6th  with daily worship of the deities, followed by Dwara, Thorana, Dwaja, Kumbharadhana. This ritual consists of 4 different forms of worship and will be performed in the Yaga Shala.

This is followed by Pathadhivasam, at which time Garuda Dwaja will be placed in the Yaga Shala for worship. Nitya Homam will be performed. The main event is DWAJAROHANAM, the hoisting of the Garuda flag on the Dwajasthambam. It is believed that Lord Garuda extends invitation to all supernatural powers (Yaksha, Gandharva, Kinnera, Kimpurusha and Rishis) to grace the Divine festival performed by the Creator of the Universe, Lord Brahma.

Also, Devathahvanam will be performed to invite all Gods to the Brahmotsavam festival. We will conclude the morning celebration by offering yellow rice to the Balipeetams, which are situated at the 8 directions in the temple.

Dance Description

As part of the sacred Brahmotsavam celebrations, our young dancers are offering a traditional piece called Mallari to the divine.

Originally performed by temple musicians on the nadaswaram as the deity was taken in procession, Mallari holds a special place in temple rituals. In dance, it is presented as an invocatory piece, filled with rhythmic vibrance and devotional spirit.

Today, these little ones offer Mallari as a humble prayer through movement, honoring the divine presence with their joy, dedication, and innocence.
